"mornings on 2" starts now. good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." live pictures here from san jose mineta international airport. another busy and rough day of travel getting underway this morning. hundreds of flights to and from the east coast have already been canceled this morning because of another winter storm in that area. the impact on bay area travelers -- coming up in a couple of minutes. good morning. i'm tori campbell. >> good morning. i'm dave clark. let's talk about weather and traffic. steve is talking about the cold. but you have more to talk about

than that, steve. >> i do. but that hawaiian departure looked good in san jose. heading off to the islands. freeze warning goes until 9:00. it's warmer, parts of the coast and also san francisco. a lot more upper 30s and 40s. that doesn't mean it's not cold inland. clearlake, 18 south. san jose, 23 degrees. pleasant hill, mark says 25 here. brentwood, is 27 and san rafael, 29 degrees. there are definitely a lot of 20s. walnut creek is 26. 23 santa rosa, napa. 29 antioch. much, much colder this morning. wind yesterday was brutal. parts of the east bay, that's tailed off. i think the record is 25 in san jose. 23. 41 san francisco. 41 half moon bay and also el granada. our observer said warmer here even though it's cold except for high clouds down in los angeles. that's about it. cold morning, sunny. warmer on the afternoon highs. the days are short. a few low to mid-50s.

here's sal. we're looking at conditions pretty cold out there, as you mentioned. the traffic is going to be slow at the bay bridge toll plaza. it's not as bad as it was yesterday. the traffic continues to move along relatively well. i do want to mention san mateo county, northbound 280. we've had improvement here. we had some black ice reported on the duran bridge. there was a crash involved as well. the crash has been cleared to the side, i would advise using caution in this area as the duran bridge usually freezes over. this is one of those days where you could give yourself a few minutes, that would really help. dumbarton bridge looking good. 280 in san jose, you can see it's looking good from the last time we checked. it still looks pretty good into the west valley. to the desk. >> thank you, sal. new this morning, a winter storm bringing more snow to the east coast. this is video of indiana this

morning. another 3 to 6 inches is expected from washington, d.c. to boston. d.c. and baltimore, though, are expected to get the worse of it. now we want to show you a live picture from washington. you can barely see the capitol dome there. people are being advised to be cautious on the roads and stay home if possible. most of government offices -- all government offices except for emergency ones are shut down today. and this winter weather is also causing problems for people here in the bay area. that's because the snow and ice have already canceled hundreds of flights around the country and this morning is no exception. ktvu channel 2 reporter janine de la vega is at san jose mineta international airport with what bay area travelers can expect there. good morning, janine. >> reporter: goorling -- good morning. it's not too bad here compared to other airports around the country. there's been some delays. one cancellation from dallas on american airlines. now, this is all stemming from the wintry weather.

i've been checking the website flightaware.and the numbers have been -- flightaware.com. and the numbers have been increasing. there's been 1100 canceled flights throughout the u.s. there were four flights to depart from sfo that are canceled. snow and ice on the eastern seaboard and the midwest have been causing problems in dallas. some passengers have been stranded for four days. some travelers in san jose had to spend the night here because they couldn't get to dallas yesterday and they are being reboughted. we spoke to another passenger who ran into problems this morning. >> we were supposed to leave at 6:15. unfortunately, my flight has not left. had a layover in salt lake city. i was gonna miss that. now i'm headed over to san francisco to hopefully catch another flight to massachusetts. >> reporter: because of weather? >> yes. there's ice on the wings. too much ice. >> reporter: according to flightaware, airports reporting the most canceled flights are

newark, dallas, la guardia, reagan and philadelphia international airport. if you are headed that direction, check your flight status before coming to the bay area airport. just be prepared. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, janine. all of that bad weather back east has forced most federal offices in washington, d.c. to close today and that means the national transportation safety board has announced the hearing into the asiana plane crash in san francisco has been postponed. in fact, this is the second time this hearing has been canceled. the first time was in october due to the government shutdown. the ntsb will look into the factors of the plane crash back in july. three people died as a result of the crash. we'll have more on today's government closure coming up in ten minutes in a live report from washington, d.c. as steve told you earlier, the bay area has another freeze warning today. the freeze warning will end at

9:00 this morning but in a lot of areas of the north bay, temperatures were in the 20s. yesterday in some spots temperatures even dipped into the teens. there will be an autopsy later today on a man whose body was found sunday morning on foothill boulevard in hayward. the unidentified victim's body was found in a courtyard near a safeway store. police don't know if foul play or the cold weather were factors in his death. and tomorrow night in san jose, there will be a prayer service for the homeless who died from the cold. over the past week, four men died in santa clara county from hypothermia. the church groups are saying that there are not enough shelters around for the homeless to handle the growing homeless population. tomorrow's service begins at 5:00 p.m. at center road and keys and then after the service blankets, jackets and other items will be passed out to the homeless. you can get up-to-the-minute temperatures for your area on our channel 2 website.

just go to ktvu.com. click on the weather tab at the top of the home page. 7:07. crews are still on the scene of a stubborn fire at a recycling center in san francisco. even though they put out the final hot spots one hour ago. the fire started at 8:00 near the facility at candlestick park. tara moriarty has more on why it took so long to put the fire out. >> reporter: the fire started in a pile of debris. that debris runs the length of an entire football field. it's 8 feet high, 12 feet wide. the crews had to sift through all of the rub by happened because the conditions were too smoky for heavy equipment to do the job. around 8:30 last night, neighbors noticed smoke pouring from the roof of the recology warehouse near candlestick park. this is a facility where people, normally contractors come, to get rid of lumber,

sheetrock, other debris. we're told luckily no hazardous materials burned. it did take more than nine hours for firefighters to completely snuff out the flames. >> everything was extremely smoky. we had to rotate crews throughout the evening. we still have crews here trying to get to the base of the fire inside this pile. >> reporter: the assistant chief told ktvu that one firefighter hurt his foot. he was treated on scene. a lot lows smoky than when -- less smoky than when we first arrived this morning. crews will be here for several more hours doing cleanup. there is a fire investigator in the warehouse trying to figure out how the fire started. we're trying to get in touch with recology to figure out if we can get inside the warehouse to bring you video from there. we haven't been able to do that yet. so hopefully in the next hour we'll be able to bring you

video, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right, tara. new this morning, the memorial service in south africa for former south african president, nelson mandela, ended just a little while ago. dozens of world leaders, including president obama, were there in the pouring rain at this stadium in johannesburg. that memorial service is the first of several events in the coming days honoring nelson mandela. now, president obama among the world leaders who spoke earlier this morning. the president said he tries to apply the lessons of nelson mandela in his own life. >> while i will always fall short of madiba's example, he makes me want to be a better man. funeral homes and san francisco city hall are collecting significants and condolence notes -- signatures and condome lens books. the book can be signed until the end of the week in the next city hall office. the books will be sent to the mandela family in january. nobel prizes are being handed out today. the bay areas weapons lab is being honored at this year's nobel peace prize ceremony. today, they are honoring an international watchdog group trying to rid the world of chemical weapons. the group played a critical role in destroying syria's chemical weapon stockpile and chemists at the livermore lab helped the group analyze and test those chemical weapons. those scientists are receiving a special honor. time now 7:11. a catholic school employee is

to 60 miles an hour, knocking down trees and power lines along the way. one tree, that one there, crashed down onto a car just barely missed the driver. in addition to the winds, the forecasters are warning about freezing temperatures in the inland valleys. winter storm warning in washington, d.c. has shut down most of the federal government including the ntsb. the asiana airlines crash hearing is postponed. ktvu's kyla campbell live in that winter storm back there in washington to tell us about the conditions and how the impact on the government -- what is it this morning? >> reporter: good morning, dave. the snow has lightened up a little bit since you saw ken wayne last hour. there's more rain mixing into the snow. i checked the forecast. it's changing a little bit. they say we're only expecting another inch than we have now. the roads, the sidewalks here in washington, pretty much just

wet. the winter storm advisory did prompt the government to close offices but many others in the district are still making their way into work. our one photographer drove in from virginia as many area and government employees to. there was heavier snowfall and dangerous road conditions on his way in. we stopped by the ntsb this morning, minutes after it was announced the hearing is postponed. there's no information on a rescheduled date until this afternoon. it could be tomorrow but there's no guarantee. the senate is working this morning and will re-evaluate whether it does get worse. but the forecast, not suggesting that at this point. the house sent me an e-mail saying they will be heading back this work this afternoon. live in washington, kyla campbell, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. 7:16. this morning, the search resumes in nevada for a missing couple and four young children. on sunday, the family members went out to enjoy the snow in

the remote mountains of northwest nevada. rescue teams there's still no sign of them after two straight nights of subzero temperatures. volunteers have now joined the search which is becoming more and more desperate. all of the missing children are younger than ten years old. >> we just gotta find them. we've known them forever. those tiny kids cannot be out there. none of them can be out in the cold like this. >> the family lives in another part of nevada. the family was last seen in a silver jeep with a black top. considering the temperatures bebeing recorded -- being recorded in east antarctica. nasa satellite data in 2010 marked a temperature of negative 135.8 degrees. that's the lowest temperature ever recorded. however, it will not make the guinness book of world records because the numbers were measured by satellite and not thermometers.

in july of this year, the new record also almost reached again when satellitessed the temperature of -- satellites reached the report of negative 135 degrees. a new poll shows that californians support the idea of legalizing marijuana. thethis study marks the first breakthrough for marijuana supporters. it also shows an increase in support from 2010. that's when a legalization ballot initiative failed. recently installed license plate cameras in piedmont seem to be paying off. 39 cameras are at 15 locations at pede mann. they are taking pictures of every car that goes back. at least two people have been arrested for driving stolen cars since those cameras were

installed just last month. sal is keeping a close eye on a rather dangerous situation, black ice. sal? >> that's right. we're gonna go right to newschopper2. showing us the did you ran bridge. people don't even know what it is called. there is a little sign that's there. this is the duran bridge. it's over in san mateo county here near hillsborough. and the traffic was earlier affected by black ice and some oil on this bridge. now, the caltrans crews did show up and spread sand over the area. just as a side note over to the right-hand side, you see the world's ugliest house over there in orange. see that igloo-looking thing? oh, my. but anyway, the bridge traffic is looking much better as you drive through. but brian flores is looking in the area and he'll have a report. yeah. that's ugly. i apologize to the owner of the house if he's watching "mornings on 2." i just don't think it's pretty.

westbound bay bridge as you come up to the toll plaza, that's backed up for a 20- minute delay. no problems on the bridge. i do want to mention in all seriousness, chp has asked us to warn you to slow the speeds. if you are driving and you hit a patch of ice, do not hit the brakes suddenly. hit the brakes gradually. then you will come to a stop that way. it can be hard. southbound 880 from a street down to fremont, the traffic is busy. at 7:20. steve? >> sal? >> i feel an apology coming. that house is just unique. it's not ugly. >> you are on your own, my friend. [laughter] >> i know. we have some cool to cold readings. cool, it's definitely running much warmer in parts of san francisco and along the coast. that doesn't mean it's not cold. there's still a hint of an easterly breeze in this cold morning light, now that we have sunrise. we could use some rain.

we're desperate for rain. before i get to the cold, let's talk about how dry it's been. this is january through december. the driest year ever in san francisco. 1917 when a total of 9 inches of rain fell. this year, so far a total of only 5.59. we would need 3.50 to avoid being the driest year ever and for the ten-day outlook, to christmas day, bone-dry. freeze warning is out until 9:00. 20s, 30s, 40s. and then 40, 50s. there will be a couple of 50s later this afternoon. clearlake is 18. sebastopol, 20. los gat aptos, 25. brentwood, 27. and san rafael, 29. any of these records, no. san of -- san rafael, 29. almost all records, 1972.

the families of those shot and killed at sandy hook elementary school, they are preparing to mark the first anniversary of that tragedy. this saturday marks one year since the day. family members will light candles to remember the victims. they also want people all over the country to mark the occasion in a special way. >> we ask that you consider performing an act of kindness or volunteering with a charitable organization in your own local community. we hope that some small measure of good may be returned to the world. >> the family also started a

website called mysandy hookfamily. you can post messages and find out how to honor those that are killed. later today, a woman from oakland will fry to washington to -- fly to washington to represent candles for all of the victims of gun violence. one woman's son was shot and killed on new year's eve. she thinks he that have been mistaken for someone else. she will join other victims of gun violence at the cathedral. you might notice more dogs on the uc berkeley campus today. therapy dogs will pay a visit to students to help them destress as they study for finals this week. the dogs are from the tony larussa animal rescue foundation. they have visited the campus for several years and studies show interaction with animals lowers blood pressure, reduces anxiety and improves well- being. san francisco is still

easterly breeze that will help those coast and bay. inland it will be cold. not as cold as yesterday. a couple of degrees colder. sebastopol 20, 28 livermore. concord 2 bits. it's so cold. i'm not going out to get the thermometer. the city is in the low 40s. a few high clouds in southern california maybe up near the roeg border. but overall, it's another sunny day. slightly warmer in the afternoon temperatures. santa cruz, 34. i think that's the first morning they've been above freezing in four days. i believe i saw that. 50s on the temperatures. a few a little warmer. san jose, morgan hill, 57. here's sal. good morning, steve. we're looking at a commute that's better than it was yesterday at the bay bridge. about a 28-delay time. this is the peak of the morning

commute. we don't have any incidents reported on the bridge or the toll plaza. we'll have to wait around there a little bit. if you are looking at the commute on the hayward area, the traffic is going to be a little bit busy as you drive on 880 southbound. the speeds here are low. 32 miles an hour as you drive here and also, 25 miles an hour in the middle of union city. so you are going to see quite a bit of slow traffic. same thing for the livermore valley. we have speeds lower than 30 miles an hour coming through livermore and also slow traffic on the altamont pass here. speeds at about 30 miles an hour. so that's kind of a tough one if you are driving west toward dublin. at 7:32. let's take a look at 280 north. you can see traffic in downtown san jose looks good in the valley. let's go back to the desk. happening today -- the sonoma county sheriff's deputy who shot and killed 13-year-old andy lopez, he's going back to work today.

ktvu's alex savidge is live in santa rosa with the details of the controversy and a protest that's planned today. alex? >> reporter: well, lopez's supporters want criminal charges for the deputy involved in this controversial shooting. many people don't believe he should be returning to work. but -- and that's why, in fact, many in this community will be holding a demonstration later on today right here outside of the sheriff's department. you can see the sign on the front door letting people know that the office will close early at 4:00 today because of that protest. now, deputy erick gelhaus will be back on the job later today, according to the assistant sheriff. he will only be working in an administrative capacity. he won't be going out on patrol. that will be the case until the investigation into the shooting is complete. gelhaus has been on paid leesk since october. that's when he -- leave since october. that's when he shot and killed andy lopez as the 13-year-old boy was holding an air soft bb gun. investigators say gelhaus

mistook the replica for a real ak-47. the family of lopez has filed a federal civil rights lawsuit. the santa rosa police department continues to investigate exactly what happened. later this morning, the county board of supervisors is expected to begin making appointments to a community and law enforcement task force that was formed in the killing of andy lopez. that happens this morning. the march begins at 4:00 and again ends at 5:30 with a demonstration here outside of the sheriff's department. live in santa rosa, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:34. child molestation charges have been filed against an employee at a private school in hayward. police say 29-year-old mia cummings sexually abused a male student over a two-year period between december 2011 and now. she worked at all saints catholic school. classrooms at community united elementary school in oakland are finally starting to

warm up after a full week with no heat. we are ally told temperatures -- we're told temperatures dipped in the 40s. >> i have to wear a jacket. it's cold. >> reporter: you wear the jacket in the classroom? >> yes. >> it's freezing in this room. all of the kids bundled up with hats and coats. that's not right. >> reporter: the school district had to wait for a replacement boiler. according to california building code, any space occupied by people must have a heating system that can help the minimum temperature at 68 degrees. pg&e is reporting that the cold weather has driven natural gas gascon gas -- natural gascon

gas consumption up. pg&e is meeting the increased demand by using gas from storage purchased last summer for significantly lower prices. and today is the third straight spare-the-air day in the bay area. the 7th one of the season. air regulators say the cold front is the reason the burn ban is needed. last winter, there were only four the spare air days. all of them in january. san francisco is still in the red from hosting the 34th america's cup. today's "chronicle" reports this summer's big yacht race on the bay has cost san francisco tax payers $5 million so far. that cost is certainly be a major factor as mayor ed lee gets set to smitt a preliminary proposal for hosting the next cup. the deadline for that bid is 12 days from now. 7:36. special road sensors in walnut creek are working now after two mothers complained about cars

speeding down newell avenue. the sensors or counters, they were installed yesterday. now, for 48 hours, they are gonna measure the numbers of cars that -- number of cars that come down the street and how fast they are going. it's all part of the required procedures to add stop signs to an area. these two mothers started the process. one of them says it's so bad, she drives her children to school and it's only a block away. >> because it's stressful and we have a near-miss on average twice a week. i'm not doing it anymore. >> now, she says she spent about $500 of other own money buying signs to warn people to slow down. the city says after the sensors are analyzed, it may take several months before stop signs are installed. police in berkeley moving ahead with a plan to lower speed limits around elementary schools. the new speed limit will be 15 miles an hour instead of 25. now, this comes despite a

police study that shows lowering the speed limit wouldn't help to keep kids from getting hit by cars. four children were hit by cars near berkeley schools between august 2010 and august of this year. today there will be a big announcement in the bay area's biggest city. larry eskagel has been interim chief for the last year and he's expected to accept a job as permanent chief during this morning's city council meeting. yesterday he spoke to robert handa in an interview. he says he's confident he can improve department morale because he's not an outsider. >> i'm a native of the community and the city and i've grown up here. i've been here for almost 28 years now. >> today's announcement of the new police chief is expected to come at the same time the city announces a new contract with san jose police officers. the city of oakland still has not hired enough police officers according to a city

council woman who is running for mayor. libby shaft later this evening will ask the council to approve a new resolution demanding that the city administrator write regular reports on how the city can reach the number of police officers approved by the budget. oakland's budget calls for $665 officers in december but only 631 are working right now. 7:39. a winter storm is hitting the east coast right now bringing up to 6 inches of new snow. and the conditions there are having an impact here at bay area airports. also, a groundbreaking first for the auto industry. the big announcement from general motors that came just hours ago. good morning. the commute, i would give it a c plus, maybe a b minus. 24. it looks okay. slow from walnut creek to oakland. you will also see some slow traffic on the other side of the tunnel. we'll tell you more about that

u.s. stock market taking a breather after another day of record highs. we just got some new information in. u.s. employers advertised the most job openings for more than five years. the figures are an encourging sign for the unemployed. taking a live look at the big board right now, the dow is currently down 5. the nasdaq has turned around. it's up 3 and the s&p is flat.

and turning now to twitter stock. the -- we just checked and twitter stock is currently up about 6% in early trading. that's close to an all-time high. it's up 9.3% from where it started yesterday. investors are encouraged by twitter's new product called tailored audiences. it lets audiences show more relevant ads to twitter users. the national retail federation says gift cards are gonna be some of the most popular holiday gifts this year. six in ten people say the gift they want most is a gift card. and shoppers are buying four times as many gift cards as they did last year. but a retail analyze says the trend could ruin christmas. she says if everyone is trading gift cards instead of unwrapping gifts, might as well write each other a check. there's a shakeup in the corporate offices of lululemon. the founder, chip wilson, will step down as the nonexecutive

is it good police work or racial profiling? a public defender in san francisco claims the san francisco police department is using unfair tactics in some neighborhoods. the public defender says a client who is on trial for murder was shown photos of other potential suspects in a book that police called" the lakeview book." the public defender, kwixuan maloof, says the book appears to be filled with african- american and latino men, some who have arrest records and some who don't. >> if there is a "lakeview book" i can assume there's a mission book, a bayview book. but there's problem not a pacific heights book. >> now, san francisco police chief, greg suhr, says the books are not racial profiling that the makeup of the gang members and the affiliates determines the racial makeup of the books. the recent discovery of a woman's body in a hospital stairwell is raising new

security questions at san francisco general hospital. a new report finds there were plenty of security issues at the hospital in the weeks before the body of lynn spaulding was found. the san francisco "examiner" obtained records showing there were more than 30 criminal incidents at the hospital between september 19th and october the 8th. they include thefts, assaults, trespassing, and vandalism. many of the crimes, according to they have report, involved mentally ill patients. about 100 people marched down san francisco's market street calling for a change in priorities. the group held a rally outside twitter headquarters and say the micromessageing service got a tax break from the city because it was supposed to bring benefits to the neighborhoods. now some are seeing their rents skyrocket. others are receiving eviction notices. >> so twitter gets my tax payers and i'm booted out.

see a crowd not moving that well. westbound here. there may be something on the bridge. i don't see anything. there could be a stall or something there. there was an earlier stall on the bridge. that that could be reason the reason why it's still slow. it was on the right shoulder of the bridge but still causing slow traffic. let's take a look at westbound 24. it's moderately heavy from walnut creek to oakland. south bay traffic is very slow on 85 from 87. 101 from capitol expressway and the 101 freeway is very slow all the way through. i want to mention the standing that we had on the duran bridge in san mateo county. black ice and the crews were throwing sand on the bridge. use caution. there could still be ice on the roadway on 280 in san mateo county, especially near the duran bridge. back to the desk. we have developing news where there is a problem at the airport with the machine that

de-ices planes. janine de la vega is there now to tell us, janine, which airlines are affected and what does this mean for the passengers out there. >> reporter: well, passengers are being delayed about an hour. i just got off phone -- off the phone with thary spokesperson. eight flights have been canceled out of terminal a. the de-icing equipment is broken. delta owns that equipment and it services other airlines. that's why more than one able is being impcketted. here's video from newschopper2 that she shot in the last 15 minutes that shows the plane in terminal a on the ground. now, the airport says -- this is impacting flights on delta, virgin, united an possibly more airlines in terminal a. they are working to reach out to southwest airlines in terminal b to see if they can use its de- icing equipment. some travelers who had flight delays had to hop on shuttle buses to san francisco because of the problems so they could

catch some connecting flights. we also spoke to a passenger that was being impacted by all of this. >> they were about to board the flight and said the wings were iced up so they had to delay the flight which caused me to miss my connection through salt lake city so they rerouted me through los angeles now. >> reporter: i've been checking the website flightaware.com. the numbers have been creeping up all morning. it's reporting that nationwide, 1200 flights have been canceled throughout the u.s. this morning. this is all because of the winter storm back there. locally, though, besides the de- icing problem, there was one flight out of san jose. four flights out of sfo are canceled. some travelers here in san jose are dealing with the de-icing problems. one way they plan to deal with

this, they are gonna do something that's called solar de-icing. that's basically backing up the planes here in terminal a so they are in the sun and actually get thawed out. airport spokeswoman says that that seems to be effective and that they hope to have all of the issues solved by 9:00 a.m. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. 8:04. meantime, federal offices are closed this morning because of that winter storm hitting the east coast. this is new video from washington, d.c. one of our views shot this for you. another 3 to 6 inches of snow is expected today from washington, d.c. to boston. dc and baltimore, they should be the heardest areas hit. i want to take you to a live picture. outside of the u.s. supreme court as we speak. again, you can see some shoveling the steps of the high court out there right now. they are moving. they are walking relatively

well. but again, that's the situation in washington, d.c. outside of the u.s. supreme court at this very moment. >> that snowy weather has basically closed down all of the federal offices in washington, d.c. so that means that today's hearing on the asiana plane crash has been postponed today. the hearing was first postponed in october due to the government shutdown. no word when it will be rescheduled. the ntsb will be looking into the factors that led to the plane clipping a sea wall at san francisco international airport back on july 6th. three people died as a result of that crash. we'll have more on the government closure because of the weather coming up in about ten minutes in a live report from washington, d.c. as steve mentioned, the bay area has another freeze warning today. the warning though, ends in about an hour. in mown parts of the north bay -- many parts of the north bay, temperatures dipped in the 20s. yesterday, they dipped in the teens. an autopsy is planned for today on a man whose body was

candlestick park. firefighters finally put out the last hot spots a couple of hours ago. ktvu's tara moriarty has been out there since 4:30 this morning. you are back now to tell us why it took so long to put those flames out. tara? >> reporter: this was a pretty stubborn fire. all of the crews have pulled out at this point. basically, the fire was in this huge file of debris that stretched the length of a football field. it was 8 feet high, 12 feet wide. you can imagine how long it took to sift by hand. they were not able to get their heavy equipment into the warehouse you see there. it's been ripped apart there. that's because the conditions were just simply too smokily for heavy equipment. around 8:30 last night, neighbors noticed smoke pouring from the windows in the roof of the recology warehouse off tunnel avenue near candlestick park. this facility, which is part of the city dump, is the place where people mainly contractors, come to get rid of lumber, sheetrock and other debris. we're told no hazardous

the ntsb hearing was set to take place. in fact, it was supposed to start about 2 hours and 15 minutes ago. we got the word after 6:00 eastern time that it's been postponed. but we haven't been told when that postpone will -- when the hearing will take place, whether it will happen later today or they are gonna put it off to tomorrow or even later. we know some people flew out from from the bay area to testify including the san francisco fire chief and representatives from san francisco international airport. i have been trying to get ahold of the people. we're still trying to find out exactly what the status is. we don't know when the ntsb hearing is gonna take place. this weather has really messed up travel with flight delays and all of that. we'll have to wait to see what happens. ken wayne, ktvu channel 2 news. >> there's couple of us here who used to live on the east coast. that doesn't look like a lot of

measure. san francisco is looking for ways to cut down on the number of businesses that are allowed to sell cigarettes. right now, 956 businesses have tobacco permits in the city which is 45 fewer than two years ago. san francisco reports sales of cigarettes are up with 12.5 million packs sold during the last fiscal year. the city already adds a 50 cent sur charge on every pack to be used for cleaning up cigarette butts. the extra fee does not appear to be slowing down the sale. nasa says the rover "curiosity" found signs of an ancient fresh water lake near the equator on mars, that it existed 3.5 billion years ago and may have supported tiny organisms. a 6-year-old boy with big

here's sal. >> we're still looking at slow traffic, steve as you drive in many areas. i do want to show you that traffic is going to be busy as you come up on the bay bridge toll plaza. although, i do want to mention that traffic has been slow. it has not been as bad as it was yesterday if that's any consolation for you. once you make it on the bridge, it looks okay but we have a big backup. this is a 15, 20-minute delay before you make it on the bridge. quickly now let's take a look at 237. the traffic is busy as you approach sunnyvale and zanker road. northbound 17, santa cruz mountains as you come down to los gatos, you are going to see slow traffic. although the actual mountain pass is not that bad and the san jose freeway system has a lot of slow traffic. let's go back to the desk. developing news in san mateo county, we were just talking about this a moment ago. drivers, you are being warned, watch out for black ice on the roads. ktvu's brian flores is out there right now to tell us what

we're seeing and what to to if you hit a patch of that. >> reporter: -- what to do if you hit a patch of that. >> reporter: definitely take it easy. if you are heading on 280 near the duran bridge, heed the warning to slow down. you are taking a look at the northbound direction here on 280. traffic moving pretty nicely. slow going over the duran bridge. there are reports of black ice. a sand dump truck followed by two caltrans trucks with two lane changing signs made another pass on the bridge to make sure that the traction is a lot better for some of the drivers. as we go from earlier -- from newschopper2, you see a couple of lanes blocked on the northbound side of 280 as crews pour sand on the freeway. the first report came at 5:40. the chp got reports of an accident involving four cars. a couple of lanes were blocked for some time while crews poured sand over the black ice. but eventually all lanes were opened about an hour later and have been opened for some time.

>> the school district's replacement boiler didn't get there until yesterday afternoon. the code says any space occupied by people has to have a heating system that can keep the minimum temperature of at least 68 degrees. pg&e says the cold weather has driven natural gas consumption is a new record. pg&e says the peak demand hit almost 5 billion cubic feet twice the amount of natural gas used on thanksgiving. it beats the previous record set about 15 years ago. pg&e says it is meeting the higher demand by using gas from storage that they bought last summer for -- for pretty lower prices. today is a third spare-the- air day in a row here in the bay area. the 7th one of the season. we know you will probably want to burn wood and it's been a frustrating period of time, watching the temperatures go down. but you can't throw a log on the fire.

close at 4:00, it will close early because of the protest. deputy erick gelhaus will be back on the job later today, according to the assistant sheriff, although he will only be working on administrative say signments -- assignments. that will be the case until the question ises finished -- investigation is finished. he's been on paid leave since october when he shot and killed andy lopez. they say he mistook the replica for a real ak-47. lopez's family has filed a federal lawsuit. the santa rosa police department continues to investigate what happened. with deputy gelhaus, cleared to return to work now, one friend of the lopez family said she's frustrated. >> everyone is just outraged because he gets to go on like it's nothing. and that's not what -- family doesn't get to do that. family and friends -- we're still fighting for this. why is he allowed back to live

u.s. stock markets opened slightly lower taking a breather. another day of record highs. five u.s. regulatory agencies are voting on the so-called rule that's a major step toward preventing extreme risk taking on wall street. it helped basically trigger the 2008 financial crisis. the dow is currently down 34, just below 16,000. the nasdaq is down 2. s&p down 3. i just checked and the new combined american airlines stock is up almost 1% right now in its second day of trade. it closed up 2.7% after its first full tray of trade when american airlines officially merged with u.s. airways. executives are encouraged by

the winter storm has shut down the federal government in washington, d.c. that includes the ntsb hearing that was due to start today investigating the asiana airlines crash in san francisco. the hearing has been postponed. ed cold weather in the bay area causing problems for air travelers. this is at san jose mineta international airport. planes are being de-iced after having problems with the de- icing truck earlier. janine de la vega is right there at san jose airport. you just talked to the spokeswoman. what's the latest there? >> reporter: well, she does say that progress is being made because more equipment has been brought in to help. so far, eight flights have been delayed. they don't expect there to be more but we're still waiting to hear that. now, the edice -- de-icing equipment was broken. delta owns the quilt and services other other planes. that's why more than one

airline was affected. here's video that we shot within the last hour that shows planes being de-iced. crews had to borrow the equipment from southwest airlines to help out. this impacted flights on delta, virgin, unite and possibly more airlines in terminal a. the some travelers tell us they were rerouted on flights to san francisco. some had to board shuttles to get there. it wasn't something the passengers were prepared for. >> we were supposed to leave at 6:15. my flight has not left. i'm now headed over to san francisco to hopefully catch another flight to massachusetts. >> you are saying because of weather. >> there's ice on the wings. too much ice. >> i've been checking the website flightaware.com. it's been reporting there's been more than 1300 canceled flights throughout the u.s. locally, one flight has been canceled out of san jose, more flights were sfo that were

golf ranks road near fontaine and el montae. in this general area here of oakland. it's an underground vault fire. it's natural gas. pg&e has told oakland fire that they are investigating some of the homes in the area. it's coming up on a road golf links road near fontaine street is the nearest location. it looks like there's natural gas, basically coming up from the road. we do know that oakland fire is on the scene. this was first reported at about 8:25. we're about 30 minutes into the incident. the fire department and the police department there are evacuating some of the nearby homes. ktvu has a crew on the way. we will let you know more about what's going on in the area. let's take a look at highway 4. it's cleared up nicely as you drive through there. been no major problems right now reported. also the morning commute looks pretty good if you are driving on the bridge but getting there is a different story. you do have a lot of slow

there is capacity spirit floating on san francisco bay. this small tree appeared near the glenwood neighbor. the tree is three feet tall. it's decorated with lights powered by two small solar panels attached to a post next to the tree. people in the area don't know who put the tree out there but they say it was a nice thing to do and they appreciate the gesture. it's ticket tuesday.
